The Caulfields lived in Arcadia Bay for a time, raising their daughter, Max. In 2008, Max's parents decided to move to Seattle. While in Seattle, Max and her father became fans of the Seattle Thunderbirds. Her parents were overeager in experiencing the sights of Seattle, behaving like "tourists" to Max, who wanted to stick out as little as possible.
Five years after settling into Seattle, their daughter was accepted into Blackwell Academy, a private school back in Arcadia Bay. Overjoy, Max and her parents celebrated. They helped Max pack her things and saw her off from Seattle.
September 21, 2013, Max received text messages from her father and mother, reminiscing on the day she was born and wishing her a happy birthday.
During Mark Jefferson's lecture, Max checks her text messages and overlooks her father and mother's text messages sent on her birthday. When she returns to her room, she reminisces on the photograph of her and her father taken at the Space Needle.
