"Episode 4: Dark Room" is the fourth episode of Life Is Strange. It was released on July 28 2015.[1]

Plot

Max returns from the alternate timeline she created to save William Price to resume her investigation with his daughter, Chloe. As the two begin to piece together the clues that will lead them to the person responsible for Kate Marsh's abduction and Rachel Amber's disappearance, their situation takes a turn for the worse on the eve of the approaching storm.

Summary

While in the alternate timeline, Max and Chloe stroll along the beach in the evening as the sun sets. After discussing Chloe's car accident, they both return to the Chloe's house. Max stays with Chloe and watch Blade Runner together until the next day. In the morning after Max wakes, Chloe asks Max to get her morphine injectors in the bathroom upstairs for her headaches. During that time Max speaks with Joyce and William, who accentuate the difficulties of accommodating Chloe's failing condition.

When she returns, Chloe and Max browse through old photographs, incidentally finding the same one Max used to create the alternate timeline. As Max contemplates whether she should return to the original timeline by using the photo, Chloe asks Max to kill her by overdosing her morphine. Max is presented with the options to accept or refuse her request.

Deciding things were better off in the original timeline, promises the Chloe from 2008 that she won't abandon her and uses the same photograph to restore things to what they were before. Relieved to be back in the original timeline, Max gives Chloe a hug. After she adjusts, the two start looking for clues about Rachel Amber. Starting with David Madsen, Max heads to the garage and opens his locker. She finds photos of Nathan and Kate and coordinates of several cars.

If Kate Marsh is still alive, both Max and Chloe visit her in the hospital, where Kate expresses her gratitude to Max for saving her. She tries to help Max to get evidence of Nathan Prescott by sending her Nathan's room number in the Boys' Dormitory.

They both head back to Blackwell Academy to gather more clues about Nathan. There, Max finds Nathan's phone hidden behind a couch in his room. Just as they are about to leave the Boys' Dormitory, Nathan shows up and gets into a fight with Max, only to be interrupted by Warren Graham who steps into the situation and beats up Nathan severely for attacking Max and Kate. Max may stay out of it or stop Warren mid-way through the fight.

Outside, Max and Chloe thank Warren for his help and ask him to help gather information about Nathan's father while they go see Frank Bowers. As they try and talk Frank off his client list, Frank either gets aggressive or gets convinced depending on the player's choice. If he gets aggressive, Pompidou may or may not come out of the RV and try to protect him by attacking Chloe and Max. Depending on the player's decisions, the showdown ends with either Frank being shot, wounded or unharmed, with the client list in the hands of Max and Chloe.

Back at the Price Household, Max puts together all of the clues they found and discover an abandoned barn may be the location of the "dark room". With more research, they find out the barn is owned by the Prescott family. They both head in that direction and discovers a secret bunker underneath the barn. The bunker is revealed to be the dark room, where pictures of Nathan's tortured subjects are hung on the walls. On one end of the room, a scene is set up with tripods and lighting.

They find a picture of Kate looking traumatized and intoxicated on a computer. After looking around for a bit, Max and Chloe finds a cabinet full of red binders labeled with the names of girls. Among them, Kate, Rachel and Victoria. Victoria Chase's binder is empty but they find Kate and Rachel's pictures taken while they were drugged in their binder. They come to the conclusion that Victoria is Nathan's next victim and is planning to dose her later at the End of the World party. Devastated and traumatized by the photos of Rachel, Chloe rushes to the junkyard with Max to try and find Rachel.

There, they find Rachel's decomposed body in the dirt. Chloe breaks down crying while Max comforts her. In the distance, the translucent doe watches as it fades away. Later at night, they both return to Blackwell Academy for the End of The World Party to get revenge on Nathan for Rachel's death. Hoping to find Nathan in the party, Chloe rushes inside while Max follows suit.

Outside, Max sees yet another strange weather phenomenon: two moons. Halfway on the courtyard, they meet a drunk Warren, who insists on taking a selfie with Max. Inside, Chloe gets lost in the crowd while Max tries to find her. Meanwhile, she starts interrogating people for the whereabouts of Nathan. She finds Victoria Chase, where Max is presented with the option to warn her about the dark room or to not warn her. Depending on the choices made by the player in the previous episodes, she may or may not believe the warning.

After her encounter with Victoria, Max sees Chloe and reunites with her to head back to the Boys' Dormitory to find Nathan. At the exit, they meet Mark Jefferson who tells them that he is about to announce the winner for the Everyday Heroes Contest. Max stays to find out who the winner is much to Chloe's dismay. The winner is revealed to be Victoria, who dedicates the prize to Kate. Max, who is not surprised by the fact, heads out with Chloe. Outside, Chloe gets a text from Nathan, saying that there won't be any evidence left after he's done. Panicking, both of them rush to the junkyard once again.

They both head in the direction of the decomposed body site quietly, being careful not to alarm Nathan. After discovering the body is still there, Max is stabbed in the back of her neck with a needle, which prevents her from using her rewind ability. She warns Chloe, who gets shot in the head and falls to the ground just as she turns to arm herself. Chloe lies dead while Max can only watch as the killer walks up to them. The wielder of the gun is Mr. Jefferson.

  • TX MinChoice E4 5A NathanDoor
An unused in-game choice graphic called TX_MinChoice_E4_5A_NathanDoor can be extracted from the game's files. It can be assumed that Episode 4 originally had a minor choice related to whether Max used her rewind powers in order to fix Nathan's room door or not.
